[...] The train emptied out at Albany. There’s four other passengers, and the crew. It’s odd. Even late night flights usually have a decent number of people aboard. I feel like I slept through closing, and I’m in an empty business. The noncommittal lit-but-dark lighting helps the effect. I feel like one of Eric Burns’ characters, newly transferred out of psychopomp station. [...]

It reminded me a lot of "A Subway Named Moebius", which I read in Fantasia Mathematica as a kid, long before I came to Boston. That story also takes place in Boston.

There's a reference to it here:
http://www.cartania.com/strangebooks.html

I don't know how to find the text now.

Loved it. Made me go and find "M.T.A" by the Kingston Trio. Now I can't stop listening to it...

I knew. I knew the moment you showed us the conductor. I said to myself "*expletive*. That's Charlie." (Cleaned up for your internet viewing pleasure.)

My father used to sing that song to me when I was a child.

Good story.

I picked up on Neith, and I guessed at the Charlie Reference. I'd never heard the original song by the Kingston Trio, but I'm familiar with the Dropkick Murphys version, "Skinhead on the MBTA", and I guessed it was similar.

Thanks for clearing that up :)

Enjoyed the story. Didn't realise how much I'd got into it until I looked up after finishing and was surprised to see that it was a sunny.

It says something, perhaps, that you caught the reference to the very minor Egyptian Goddess, but not the reference to the popular folk song by the Kingston Trio.

What that something is, I do not hazard to guess. ;)

This was another really good one. I'm loving the modern mythology section of this site.

Also, I really, really dig all the references you manage to make (I caught every one of them but Charlie, oddly enough. Guess I'm just too young to have listened to the Kingston Trio often enough to recognize it).

Very good story. I knew where it was going from the moment you described the final passengers, but it's more about the journey than where it leads. It was a great way to start the day.

I'd heard that song before, once, but for some reason I've heard The UUs who Never Adjourned more often. If you've been in a meeting with Robert's Rules of Order, you'll see the connection.
