For months, I was getting spam that consisted of nothing but two to three sentences from Pride and Prejudice. It amused me tremendously, and I was sorry when it tapered off. Had it continued, I might have actually gotten through the whole book.

I'm just starting to backtrack through the Banter Latte archives, and I'm enjoying them immensely. Put me down as another who'd buy dead tree versions of the mythology and Justice Wing stuff.

To my knowledge -- and it may be wrong -- it's a regionalism largely focused on the New York City/Long Island area. I've heard it from the Italian community and from the Jewish community, but more the latter than the former, which makes me assume (though it may be wrong) that it's a derivation from Yiddish or Hebrew language construction and grammar.

Here's hoping Lilamrta is still following this thread. :)

It's kind of ironic that I'm using this particular post to comment on it, but you've used a construction in a couple of stories recently that's new to me and I'm curious if it's a regional thing or what:

“You know from social networking, right?”

I assume from context that to "know from x" is to know anything about x, but it's something I've never heard before and then came across twice in your posts recently (I believe the other case was in the most recent Interviewing Leather). The amateur linguist in me got curious. I tried googling for it and managed to sort out a few cases of similar usages from the lots of cases of "as we know from such-and-such a book." I was wondering if you knew anything about the origins of it.

For those of you interested in some of the theory behind all of this, The World Wide Lexicon project touches on some of the things Dale was striving for. It's interesting stuff. I'm considering grabbing one of the plugins for it.

wow, your writing just... wow. You really depress me with these stories. But the fact oyu can evoke an emotional response at all really shows your skill. not one truly HAPPY ending yet. So sad. But there's almost always an optimistic twinge. Maybe Dale will finish... Sheesh, Excellent stuff.

Oh -- also missed one other note. The meeting took place after Sundown on Friday -- which means it took place after the start of the Jewish Sabbath.

Mrph. The asterisk is an artifact of the writing process. I write in Ulysses, which is amazingly cool, and lets me write... well, essentially the way I always used to write for things like Superguy. I use asterisks to indicate emphasis, which I then run through Markdown in BBEdit to convert everything to moderately nice XHTML.

Sometimes, asterisks slip through, though.

What's with the asterix? "You of all people*"...

The prequel that came to mind takes place, say, one hundred years in the alternate future where Minaret is built, and humanity ascends to godhood...and acts like a jackass in the god community, or picks the wrong side in an ongoing conflict, and is sentenced to have its existence be deleted from history. The story could end on an up note the human-entity manages to swing it so that this deletion will occur in the most humane possible way, as opposed to simply preventing the development of life in Earth.
