Eh, I agree with Longwing, with the rude awakening thing. In a really good story, people change, and Lady Jess is looking like the first prime candidate.

Man, Lady Jessica started out as an entertaining character, but she's sort of a bitch now, I think.

I hope she gets eaten by a troll.

I expect she's going to receive a rude awakening somewhere along the journey. Even as she teaches Jack to comport himself, she'll learn that there are vast stretches of countryside where the ability to comport yourself is as useful as a pipe with no tobacco.

The language of the Old Ways is infectious. I liked this chapter a lot better. Yes, we're still dealing with the foreshadowing, but our narrator actually out-and-out apologizes for getting sidetracked, which really endeared me to our anonymous storyteller.

Gah. Am I the only one who dislikes Lady Jessica? I like our Jack just fine, thank you *very* much.

Also! Isn't it coarse, not course? I'm asking rather than correcting, because it may be an Americanism, like spelling Americanism with a z.

Is it noblesse oblige, in Lady Jessica's case? Or is noblesse oblige a convenient excuse for her to validate a rather... limited worldview?

Bloody English noblesse oblige.

I know, I know, not English, more gentry/squirearchy than nobility, and she no doubt means quite well by the man, and certainly no harm.

Still: bloody English noblesse oblige. :)
