On Continuity, Statements, Revisions and Retcons

I made it perfectly clear, back in the days when things updated, that there were several universes dealing with the ‘superheroic,’ if such is a word we would want to use.

In particular, the Mythic hero, from long ago, in times of mystery men.

And the wings of Justice, or tales of now.

And I have no doubt but that when I said these things they were the truth.

But much has happened. To me. To them.

Maybe there was a crisis. A calamity. A disaster most foul.

Or maybe there was a hop between universes and worlds.

Or maybe we didn’t know the truth before, but we do now.

Maybe.

All I do know is this.

Mythic
Emergent
Halcyon
Cataclysmic
Nadiral

Justice Wing.

Linearity is for suckers.

On the question of relaunch/update/et cetera

Since last I complained reported, we’ve had a few more knocks. More doctoring, more weirdness. I may have gallstones or sludge (my favorite diagnosis ever. I have sludge!).

Oh, and I have a hernia. That’s okay, though. My intestines just wanted to poke their head out, have a look around. Who can blame them?

Despite this, and a setback in terms of my strategy, the relaunch proceeds apace. For the record, the relaunch will include Lovelace 1/2, Interviewing Trey and Corbett-877. So yes, there will be more.

And they will be free to read, right on Banter Latte. I won’t force you to pay for the rest of the story you’ve already started. That’s what we in the industry would call a ‘dick move.’

How much more?

That will still depend on you. I’ll put together a post soon, explaining how the new site will work.

There will be a bunch of other stuff. Reprints and rebroadcasts. And consolidations — but organized so folks won’t need to get caught up in the whole if they just want parts.

And there will also be serials — some all new stuff (well, some of it will seem pretty familiar, but still). That will be paid, but I hope folks will think it’s worth it.

really hope that, actually. My costs are going up in all of this. A few people donated money to me (and that has been amazingly cool and helpful), but what I really want are things that people can get that will give me the happy monies.

Still, Andi, Lee and Chapman will all be back. That’s perhaps the most important takeaway.

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I need to go apply heat to my gut, so I can gently encourage my insides to go back inside.

In his barcolounger at dusk…

Snarky

In his barcolounger at dusk, dormant Snarky waits dreaming…

Five tweets of interest to those waiting patiently for Banter Latte’s return….

An Update, or “no, they’re not roofing materials”

So. What’s happened since last we talked?

Well….

I swear I’m not making this up.

I got shingles.

swore I wasn’t making this up! Jeez. More after the break.

New Year’s Day, or “oh crap.”

“Life is what happens while you are busy making other plans.” –John Lennon

It was the worst sound I had ever heard in my life. The most horrifying, hideous noise in the universe. It was a sound I’ve literally heard in my nightmares for months since then.

And it came from my wife’s throat.

It was, weirdly enough, New Year’s Day. Day one of 2014. And we had plans.

Spoon Gathering and Monetizing: Where the Heck is Eric

Look! It’s an eBook cover!

All right — so it’s been longer than expected. Which… perhaps ironically is to be expected. Things have been unusually rough these last several weeks at work and elsewhere. I won’t go into the laundry list, but suffice it to say we did our laundry, and it followed a list.

That may not have made any sense.

Anyhow — I’ve had to work out time management, and unfortunately it’s been Banter Latte that’s paid the price. There are a few reasons for that — some reasons I think everyone can get behind. And some… well, perhaps not as much. The former are simple — my work pays my bills, and beyond that my health, my wife, my wife’s health, my cat’s health (seriously. This is a thing. Why? I have no clue) have had to take precedence. This doesn’t make me any happier about Banter Latte suffering, but it’s something that I think everyone can agree with.

As for the bits people might not like….

Well, I’ll have to be frank. Banter Latte isn’t exactly a money making proposition.

Understand, I’m okay with this — I wasn’t writing here for the cash. I was writing here because I love to write. I love the stories that we’re able to tell here. I love Lovelace 1/2, Interviewing Trey, Corbett-877, and the myths. And in one sense, they’re an important part of my psychological well being. When I’m writing, I’m on a more even keel. My brain is happy.

But there’s also a practical side to all this, and unfortunately that practical side suffers in all this. Banter Latte loses money. Seriously — ads or no, it costs me more money to put the stuff out than it takes in, and the trends don’t look promising for that to change.

Does this mean we’re closing down? Hell no. All these stories are going to be finished, and they’ll be put here at no cost to you. However, I have some other prospects that will actually bring in money, and that’s really important, especially these days.

As a side note? Those of you who donated? Thank you. You guys are fantastic. And if you haven’t, that’s okay too. I’m glad you’re reading.

So. Things will be slow for now, but we’re not closing down.

Now. I am able to cheerfully point you all at the beginning of one prospect for me getting some cash. We’re getting some of the work up at Smashwords and on Amazon — so far, Proserpina and the Nemesid are both up for purchase at Smashwords and Amazon. Both have been cleaned up and revised, and I think they’re the stronger for it! If you want the convenience of Kindle through Amazon’s site, it’s there for you! If you want DRM-free or lots of other formats, Smashwords is your hookup. And both are going to be moving to lots of other sites like Barnes and Noble and… top sites as soon as the systems churn them out. There will be a lot of other stories going up there over the next week or two as well.

No, the free versions of these stories are not going to be taken down from this site. Frankly, I think that would be a dick move at best. Please feel free to reread them all you like! Though — if you want to jump on these sites and review the eBooks, that would be a really nice thing to do. And if you would like to buy the revised versions… well, I will like you a lot.

Lots more of these stories will be appearing on these and other sites soon as well. Also, that sweet sweet Nemesid cover that appears up above is full sized on my freshly minted Deviantart page. There will be other stuff appearing there as well.

So. To recap: I’m not leaving Banter Latte or taking stuff off the site. However, I do need to focus on paid work for a bit, which will slow me down here. Not coincidentally, there’s writing of mine you can buy — and that would be an awesome thing! And in the meantime, that’s a nice picture up in the corner.

Thanks as always. More soon, with any luck.

…so, yeah. It’s been a bloody hard week, so my hopes of recarving out daily writing time and getting back to full buffer have vanished like… some… kind of vanishing thing. Also, my ability to produce similes is impaired. We’ll take another shot on Monday. Obviously, getting Lovelace and Trey out are the priorities right now, and they’ll be put into place. I have a plan to ensure some content during the week even if work continues to be worse than expected as well. Thanks for your continued support!

Admin: Putting Together a Miss (after the fact)

So I’m pretty sure there’s supposed to be Interviewing Trey #11 sitting here, but I’m not seeing it on the site.

Including in the background fiddly-bits.

Did I dream queuing it to appear?

I’m going to dig into this a bit. While I’m doing that, I’ll figure out if I want to run it anyway, since… well, Interviewing Trey! Or if it’s a bit late in the day for it, in which case I’ll queue it for a special Tuesday Edition, then have #12 come out next Friday as normal.

Apologies for the delays, action heroes (and villains)!

The New Summer Schedule!

I know — it always seems like we frontload this stuff in an orgy of posting. Well, I promise you all that’s not actually happening. What is happening is a flurry of administrative tasks and getting the full system underway. Posting yesterday’s myth was as much a test of the revised system as it was a cheerful rumination on the fabulous Time Zeppelin I will not have full access to until the end of this incarnation and the beginning of the next.

As of today? We start the new Summer Schedule.

Banter Latte will be organized around a pretty simple schedule. Three days a week you’ll get content. The rest of the time… well, stuff may show up, and it may not. We’ll see what happens.

Here’s the schedule as we currently see fit to give it to you:

  • Monday: The Mythology of the Modern World: A return to these, the modern myths that explain the world around us, without such trivialities of science. Unless science helps, of course.
  • Wednesday: Fiction: Stories of various lengths, including serials — first up is Lovelace 1/2, the story of a young teenager named Andi, who’s discovering that neither she nor the world she lives in are what she’s been raised to believe.
  • Friday: Justice Wing: The stories of a fictional universe where superheroes are real, and sometimes surprisingly mundane. Up first: Interviewing Trey, the sequel to Interviewing Leather.
  • Weekends: Weekends won’t usually be a time for content, but that is where we’ll have the open call for questions to be answered in the Mythology.

Other stuff, like I said, may show up on Tuesdays or Thursdays — I have some poetry I’d like to throw up now and again, for example — but no promises. Regardless, the idea is at most there will be just one piece of creative content per day, and obviously not every day. So, no danger of overwhelming browsers with sheer content.

See? I can be trained.
