July 12th, 2007 — Mythology, Short Story
It’s Random Thursday yet again! It’s time to elaborate on monday’s myth a little.
Well, really what we’re doing is reprinting something I wrote in my Livejournal on my birthday back in 2005. Which actually requires a little backstory. Which seems weird, but there we are.
I have the good fortune to have been born on January the 27th. Besides making me an Aquarius and making my birthstone garnet, this also means I share a birthday with Mozart and Lewis Carroll, among others. It’s the second that we’re interested in right now.
You see, a few years back a guy named Dan Curtis Johnson declared that January 27 should be Down the Rabbit Hole Day on Livejournal. A day where like Alice we all went a little mad, and did our normal LJ posting, only from the world on the other side of the looking glass, however that fanciful nature came to the individual poster.
I found the idea charming and gave it the old college try, despite feeling ill that day (or perhaps because of it. Who can tell). I know some people have learned to despise Down the Rabbit Hole Day the same way they despise Nanowrimo or Talk Like A Pirate Day or many other events that encourage people to act out in public whether they have talent or not.
Regardless, I liked the bit of mythbuilding I did for that year’s Rabbit Hole, and it actually is informing the overall “Mythology of the Modern World” series, so it deserved at least a shot here in the Random Days.
Why isn’t it in the actual Myth block? Because the Myth block is meant to be new writing each week, not reprints of even germane subjects. So there. Nyah.
Anyway. Please enjoy Calliope Jones and the Writer’s Cusp.

July 11th, 2007 — Fan Fiction, Horror, In Nomine, Short Story
It’s storytelling day! And this is a bit different for it — this is an In Nomine piece — a bit of fan fiction. And who’s to say I can’t post some fan fiction now and again? It’s long — novella length, around twelve thousand words. Normally, I’d break it into more than one part for this venue, but I think it works better in its full form.
I actually think this is a pretty good story. Good enough that I’m sad it has absolutely no prospects for sale, since it’s fan fiction and it’s very vested in the In Nomine intellectual property. It’s also something I wrote as kind of a culmination on the work I did on In Nomine Superiors 4: Rogues to Riches. I wrote an extended writeup of Alaemon, the Demon Prince of Secrets.
This is a story of one Alaemon’s demons. A calabite — one of the demons of destruction, who can destroy with a glance (though the universe — or Symphony — would take notice). Paranoia is a part of daily life in Alaemon’s Conspiracy.
Most everything else should be self explanatory. If not, ask a question in comments and I’ll try to answer it.

June 28th, 2007 — Humor, Justice Wing, Short Story, Superhero
Random day #2! Whoo hoo! Happy Thursday.
This is a story I actually submitted to… hrm. Many, many magazines, back in the late nineties. Most were simply uninterested. One, The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction, was interested — or so the rejection letter claimed — but they’d bought a story with almost the same premise less than three weeks before. (A story I now assume was written by Mike Resnick, as I’ve seen reference to a story of his from that era that sounds a lot like this one.)
I’ve thought about updating it (and correcting a few dumb medical errors) and resubmitting it places, but meh.
Technically, this would be a Justice Wing story, though it’s as much Superguy as anything else.
Enjoy “On Call.”
