Corbett-877 #1

This entry is part 1 of 6 in the series Corbett-877

It’s Monday, which normally means ‘myth day,’ but you’ll notice this isn’t a myth. At least, not directly. We’re going to be giving the myths a bit of a break.

Understand, we’re not angry at the myths. The myths are a lovely thing. However, right now the word-count for the myths exceeds the word-count for both of the other major works we’ve done here since the relaunch by almost a factor of two, and that’s not what we were looking for. So, for right now, we’re going to pull back a touch — reload myth fodder with some additional call for myths, and otherwise let them go fallow for a brief while.

While they’re gone, we’re going to start a new serial — Corbett-877. This is a story I’ve wanted to tell for longer than there’s been a Banter Latte (even counting the original version). It’s science fiction. Well, in once sense. I suppose it could also be seen as fantasy, or even horror. Depending on definition. It explores a few questions… well, that some folks have been answering at least dating back to September 8, 1966.

As you can guess from that date, this started life as a pastiche. Where it ends life….

…well, that is the question.

I hope you like Corbett-877.

Corbett-877 #2

This entry is part 2 of 6 in the series Corbett-877

Week two of Corbett-877. Last week went pretty well for a first post. I’m hoping today builds on that a little.

We’ll start to get more into the theme today — you may guess this isn’t exactly a two fisted adventure novel we’ve started. It is, as was implied, a Star Trek pastiche, though that’s really meant to more set the stage than anything else. The characters are meant to be themselves, and no one else.

So far, I quite like them — especially Captain Liam Corbett, our commanding officer. Which is good. As you’ll see today, we’ll be seeing quite a bit of him in this story.

Corbett-877 #3

This entry is part 3 of 6 in the series Corbett-877

Monday comes again, and brings with it episode three of Corbett-877. Rather than repeat the silly confusion I created with Lovelace 1/2, I’ll say that the ‘canonical’ pronunciation is Corbett Eight-Seventy-Seven, though if privately you want to pronounce it ‘Eight Seven Seven’ or ‘Eight Hundred and Seventy-Seven’ or something else… well, why would I mind? It’s your mind, man. Let it run free.

We’re only beginning to scratch the surface of Purgatory — the city and the ‘existence’ — as of this entry, but it fascinates me. While you don’t want to let world building run wild over your story, there’s a lot of little details that only begin to get covered here.

While we’re here, I should also mention that we have added some much requested functionality to Banter Latte. Over in the sidebar, you’ll notice a ‘series’ indicator now, with a list of running and completed series (not all the old stuff is there yet, but give it time). Now, when you click on a new entry, you’ll get a series box at the top of the post for easy navigation, and series specific ‘previous/next’ options at the bottom. When you click on the sidebar series link, you’ll also get a list of posts that read top to bottom instead of newest to oldest. It’s like it’s meant for fiction reading or something. You have Jim Zoetewey, author of the excellent Legion of Nothing stories, to thank for that kick in the behind.

Enjoy episode #3!

Corbett-877 #4

This entry is part 4 of 6 in the series Corbett-877

And we’re back with a whole new week, and with it a whole new episode of Corbett-877! So far, you guys seem to like the new story — which I suppose is now a month old, so maybe ‘new story’ isn’t quite accurate. Man, time goes quickly.

I’ve had a couple of folks ask if the Myths are coming back. Oh heavens yes — though they’re likely to be ‘open’ posts, done on Tuesdays or Thursdays when the spirit — or spirits — move me. I’ve got some other things that’ll likely be showing up on those days as well. Why? Because they can.

Beyond that… well, I hope everyone’s having a lovely day. Please enjoy!

Corbett-877 #5

This entry is part 5 of 6 in the series Corbett-877

Hey hi, all!

As a reminder, Interviewing Trey returns tomorrow at 9 am EDT, covering the phantom episode from last Friday. Then Lovelace 1/2 as we always expect on Wednesday, and then the next episode of Interviewing Trey on Friday. Got all that? Cool!

But it’s Monday right now, which means Corbett-877.

One thing that’s interesting about writing these is the aspect of serializing novels. Though I pretty much number these as episodes, they’re mostly structured as novels, broken into scenes with certain dramatic necessities taking place in certain ways. This is as much an opportunity for first-drafting as anything else. As a result, we make it to, say, part 5 of Corbett-877 and find ourselves still in Corbett’s Coffee. In one sense, we’re still in ‘Part One’ of the book.

The name of that part? “The Latest Liam Corbett.”

Here ’tis. Have fun!

Corbett-877 #6

This entry is part 6 of 6 in the series Corbett-877

School’s well underway and we are back on track! Sorry for the momentary disturbance. And for those who dropped a tip in the hat — thank you. It’s well appreciated.

One cool thing about doing flashbacks in these episodes? It’s actually really freaking easy to work out the timestamps for them. Hooray for the metric system!

Well, the decimal time system.

Anyway, here’s Corbett-877 #6.
